Often when I talk to people about digital accessibility and sustainability I often encounter common justifications for delaying inclusive or green design. While there are certainly technical and cultural challenges to overcome when shifting how we build, much of the resistance actually stems from a misunderstanding of what accessible and sustainable design principles really are.

At Manifesto, we’ve found that once you stop treating these requirements as "extras" and start treating them as the foundation of quality, the supposed trade-offs simply disappear.

Why the "compromise" is a myth

One of the most persistent defenses is the idea that accessibility limits creativity. We’ve been told for years that strict contrast ratios or rigid hierarchies make a site look "boring." But at Manifesto, we’ve proven this is a false choice. We have built countless websites where the original, high-impact design didn't need to change a single visual element in order to meet the highest accessibility standards.

When we design for that 20%, we aren't narrowing our vision, we’re sharpening it. Clear navigation and readable text don’t just help those with visual impairments -  they make the experience better for a parent holding a child or a commuter on a mobile screen in bright sunlight.

Digital products have a physical footprint

It is easy to think of the "cloud" as weightless, but the digital industry now rivals aviation, accounting for roughly 4% of global carbon emissions (The Sustainable Agency, 2026). Every kilobyte has a carbon cost.

While many people cite "dark mode" as the ultimate green solution, the reality is more nuanced. It helps save energy on OLED screens, but real sustainability comes from stripping away "bloat"—the heavy scripts and unoptimised assets that drain resources and slow down the user.

The limits of automated tools

There's a common assumption that if the automated testing tools give you a green light, your site is accessible. While these tools are a helpful starting point, they only catch about 40% of accessibility issues (Deque Systems, 2025).

The remaining 60% requires human judgment, things like logical tab orders, meaningful alt text, and ensuring a screen reader actually makes sense of the content. Relying solely on a "pass" from a scanner is a dangerous justification for stopping the work. True accessibility is measured by a person's experience, not just a software audit.

Rethinking video and motion

We often hear that video and animation are essential for "modern" storytelling, but they are also some of the heaviest contributors to a site's carbon footprint and cognitive load.

Digital sustainability doesn't mean you have to delete all your video content. It means being more intentional with how it’s served. Auto-playing video is a major offender; it drains battery life and data, but it also creates significant barriers for users with vestibular disorders or ADHD.

A more inclusive and sustainable approach is to give the user control. Providing a "click to play" option and ensuring you have a "prefers-reduced-motion" query in your code allows the site to respect the user's settings. You're still providing the rich content, but you're doing it in a way that respects the device's energy consumption and the user's sensory needs.

Moving beyond the quick fix

Lately, there has been a surge in "shortcuts" like AI accessibility overlays. These are often sold as a silver bullet for compliance, but they usually create more friction. They tend to interfere with screen readers and fail to fix the actual code.

True accessibility isn't something you can bolt on at the end. It requires a "Shift Left" approach where these principles are integrated from the very start.

Inclusive design is a mindset for building better. When we reduce data weight for the planet, we help users on slow connections. When we simplify navigation for accessibility, we improve the experience for everyone.
