Why accessibility matters

Accessibility in the digital landscape means designing content, tools, and technologies that everyone can use, including the 17.7% of people in England who identify as disabled. Temporary impairments, like a broken arm, can also affect a much broader range of users.

From 28 June 2025, digital products in Europe must comply with WCAG 2.1 AA standards under the European Accessibility Act (EAA). This will also impact UK organisations providing services to the EU, and similar legislation is expected in the UK.

To truly stay ahead, organisations should be aiming for WCAG 2.2 compliance. Not being prepared for these changes could lead to big headaches and even fines.

But it’s not just about compliance. Accessible design makes business sense – it opens your products to a wider audience, improves user experience, boosts customer loyalty, and reduces the risk of costly legal issues. It’s about creating digital experiences that work for everyone, every time.

We’ve made accessibility one of the foundations of our manifesto for change. It’s not just about ticking boxes – it’s about creating digital experiences that work for everyone. Let’s make the web a more welcoming place together.
